About the Series

This video series draws upon decades of Don Street’s sailing experience and his dozens of ocean crossings. Through Don Street Sailing Tips, you can learn from one of the legendary sailors of our time.

For 57 years, Don sailed Iolaire, his 46 ft engineless wooden yawl built in 1905 on which he crossed the Atlantic numerous times. He is largely responsible for opening up the Caribbean to modern cruisers through his Imray-Iolaire charts and Caribbean cruising guides. Don has also contributed a wealth of knowledge about ocean sailing through his two volume set, The Ocean Sailing Yacht, as well as countless articles he’s written for major sailing magazines. For nearly forty years, Don Street made annual Atlantic crossings sailing to and from his home in Ireland to the Caribbean island of Antigua. He auditioned sailors for his crew and passed down the bluewater sailing skills he had learned from previous generations of old salts along with his own experiences. Transatlantic with Street is the result of such a voyage. For crew member Gavin Shaw, this was his first transatlantic passage. A high level ad executive in the UK, Gavin obtained a state-of-the-art, small 3/4 inch video camera from JVC and shot one of the first sailing documentaries on video. Unfortunately, his original edit master one-inch tape degraded over time, and we are left with a VHS copy – now the only master tape from which we made this digital version.
